ABOUT US & OUR PROJECT
We are Girl Scout Troop 1942 located in Carlsbad, Ca. We have been together for over 5 years and are Juniors now. We worked on our Bronze Award which is the 3rd highest award a Girl Scout can earn and the highest for our age group. We worked to support the Ronald McDonald House of San Diego and help the community learn what they do there. In our effort to decide what to work on for our project we knew we wanted to help other kids. Due to covid restrictions, we couldn't work with Rady's Children's Hospital, so our final decision was to help the kids & their families at RMDH! But, we didn't stop there... We realized we did have the opportunity to help more organizations so we also stemmed out and donated 14 "Birthday Bags" to foster children at Straight From The Heart, 12 "Art Kits" to Casa De Amparo for at-risk youth, and 4 boxes of activity books & communication books to the Family Services Division of the Carlsbad Police Department.
Our main Bronze Award project was a bigger success than we ever dreamed! We were interviewed by 2 local TV stations about our project and they helped us get the word out about our efforts. (links below) Thanks to the generosity and support of the wonderful people in our community we were not only able to reach our goal, we exceeded it BIG TIME! Our goal was to make 50 Welcome Bags for the Ronald McDonald House... we met that and then some! We also raised $2,132.00! With that money, we were able to fill in the blanks on our bags AND we were able to help furnish their newly remodeled TV Room Teen Hangout with bean bag chairs, PlayStation controllers, charging stations, lights, decorations, and storage. We also were able to provide the RMDH with some kids socks and underwear, which is another continuous need. We also had boxes and boxes of books and activity books donated. The outcome was mind-blowing! We are very proud of our accomplishments. We all put in a minimum of 20 hours each. All of our hard work and determination made this project work, even in a pandemic. It slowed us down, but it was never going to stop us! We got creative, we were flexible, the community stepped up to help and we are able to call our project a HUGE SUCCESS!
Thank you to everyone who helped us along the way! Giving isn't just about making a donation, it's about making a difference... and you did!
Often when families check-in it is unexpected and they didn't have a chance to plan and pack. It's also a very stressful time for the whole family. Our "Welcome Bags" will help them adjust and have an easier time while they are there and the TV Room will give siblings a place to relax. Ronald McDonald House Charities of San Diego relies on volunteers and donations to be able to do all of the wonderful things they do for the families of children who are at Rady's Childrens Hospital.
